Disney and Lucasfilm are not slowing down because even more Star Wars films are to be made in the near future. This is on top of another trilogy already announced in pre-production to be written and directed by Rian Johnson.
On the official Star Wars website, it was announced that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are going to write and produce a new series of Star Wars movies. These films are not connected to the current trilogy nor are they related to the Rian Johnson trilogy either.
"David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today," said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. "Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting."
Disney and Lucasfilm do not want to rest and it seems like they are planning to have a Star Wars movie out every year.
We already got The Last Jedi and a few months from now will see the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story.
One of the reasons The Force Awakens was so successful was because there was a 10 year gap between Star Wars movies. Not to mention it served as a sequel to the 1983 classic Return of the Jedi.
I'm hoping Disney and Lucasfilm does not oversaturate the Star Wars franchise in the near future.
Hopefully they can do something similar to the Marvel Studios formula and give us a series of films that feel different from one another, while still retaining the essence of the original franchise.
There's still no release dates for the new films, but presumably all of the new Star Wars movies will be out after December 2019 when Episode IX comes out.
