It has been a pretty good year for Sony Pictures as Venom has made over $850 million worldwide, but their good luck has not run out yet.

This is because Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is out and it's currently the hottest film around right now.

As reported by Box Office Pro, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse was the number one movie this weekend earning an opening of $35.4 million. This is the highest debut for any animated feature that has been released in the month of December.

While the opening is much lower compared to live action Spider-Man films, word of mouth is going to carry this film to new heights.

The movie currently has a healthy Rotten Tomatoes rating of 97% and the Cinemascore is an amazing 'A+' from all viewers.

Probably the biggest test for Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is next weekend where it has to come up against Aquaman and Bumblebee.

These movies all cater towards the same type of audiences so it will be interesting to see what people watch next weekend.

A movie that people did not watch this weekend is the Peter Jackson produced Mortal Engines. The movie came out this weekend in North America and only made $7.5 million in its first three days in cinemas.

This is a very low opening considering the fact that the movie cost between $100 million to $150 million to make. From a worldwide standpoint, the movie has made $42.3 million so far and it's unlikely to break even.

Speaking of worldwide, Aquaman has been shredding the competition around the world.

The movie has already made over $261.3 million a week before it comes out in North America. Most of its total comes from China because it has made over $189.2 million in the land of the Middle Kingdom.
