The BET Awards wore down and there was something of a surprise in the category of 'best new artist'.

Now this is certainly one of the toughest categories for any awards show, but for hip-hop and R&B, it is made even more difficult.

There was a ton of talent in the category - Ariana Grande, Schoolboy Q, Rich Homie Quan, Mack Wilds, and August Alsina. All of which have been doing some big things recently.

The big surprise was who actually won the prestigious award: August Alsina. Now he did have some breakout hits in the way of "Don't Forget About Me" and "Make It Home ft. Jeezy".

Both with several million views on Youtube and his star has been rising high in the last 6 months. You could say that the award may be based on momentum, because August seemingly has more momentum than the rest at this moment.

Because either way, most were surprised. But he did recieve a ton of support on Twitter including the boss himself:

In the rap world, the BET Awards are more important than just about anything else.
