Despite competition from the likes of Netflix and video games, movies continue to still entertain millions of people around the world.

2017 was a record year at the Box Office thanks to huge releases such as Star Wars: The Last Jedi, The Fate of the Furious and more.

As reported by Deadline, $39.92 billion was earned around the world making it the highest grossing year in Box Office history. In North America alone, $11.12 billion was earned which is slightly lower than the $11.4 billion received in 2016.

The highest grossing movie of 2017 was Disney's Beauty and the Beast earning $1.264 billion at the worldwide Box Office.

Following closely behind is The Fate of the Furious at $1.236 billion and then Star Wars: The Last Jedi in third place with $1.04 billion.

That said, The Last Jedi is on track to leap frog Beauty and the Beast since it's still showing in cinemas.

Estimates say that the film could eventually gross between $1.5 billion to $1.6 billion worldwide making it the fourth highest grossing film in history.

2017 had a lot of great films that were both liked by critics and audiences alike. There was something for everyone that it will be hard for 2018 to surpass it.

2018 could earn more money than 2017 if Avengers: Infinity War can do most of the heavy work. Infinity War is expected to be the highest grossing film of 2018 followed by Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

With numbers this high, it appears people are still liking the cinema experience.

Going to the cinema is an age old tradition that is unlikely going to die out anytime soon as there's no other experience of watching a movie than on a fancy big screen.
