Some company's take marketing a little too far and Morton Salt certainly has. The company is sponsoring a social media initiative where it's urging people to "Be the Iconic Morton Salt Girl This Halloween to Enjoy Prizes, Social Media Glory."

First of all, the Morton Salt Girl is no Toucan Sam, Gorton's Fisherman, Quaker Oats old guy or any of a hundred other better-known mascots.

It's a C-list character at best hanging out at parties where she hopes to meet bigger stars like Count Chocula or Mike and Ike. That did not stop Morton's from issuing the following press release:

For 100 years, the Morton Salt Girl has been the ultimate brand icon and now she's this year's ultimate Halloween costume.

In celebration of her centennial this year, the company is encouraging Morton Salt Girl fans to sport her iconic look this Halloween and participate in the Morton Salt Girl Halloween Costume Contest and Sweepstakes for a chance to win great prizes.

"We've seen a growing trend of adults and children dressing as the Morton Salt Girl for Halloween," said Shayn Wallace, Vice President of Morton Salt's Consumer and Industrial Businesses.

"In this milestone year, we wanted to reward the best dressed Morton Salt Girl in America through our new online promotion."

Entering the Morton Salt Girl Halloween Costume Contest and Sweepstake is as simple as putting together the costume itself:

Snap a picture or video of yourself or your child dressed up in a Morton Salt Girl-inspired costume.
Share your picture using the hashtag #MortonCostumeContest on Twitter or Instagram.
You can also post a Vine video on Twitter - make sure to use the hashtag #MortonCostumeContest with your video.

Videos posted only on Instagram or Vine will not be accepted for entry in the promotion as they must be shared on Vine via Twitter.
Select entries will be featured online at www.MortonCostumeContest.com.

Each person who properly posts a Morton Salt Girl-inspired Halloween costume is automatically entered into a sweepstakes drawing for a chance to win a $100 gift card. Also up for grabs in the costume contest are seven $200 gift cards.

The contest Grand Prize Winner will receive a $1,000 gift card. A panel of judges will select the Grand Prize Winner and the seven other contest winners based on creativity, brand relevance and other criteria.

The promotion runs until Nov. 2, 2014 at 11:59:59 p.m. ET. Entrants' social media handles must be public for Morton Salt to view submissions, and they must follow @MortonSalt on Twitter for winner notification.

See Official Rules at www.MortonCostumeContest.com for full details regarding entry, prizes, and etc.*
