In its unprecedented run "The Simpsons" has killed off a number of characters.

Most famously Maude Flanders died as a result of an accident with a T-shirt gun at a car race.

Though that was tragic (in a sense) it actually opened up a lot of creative possibilities for Ned Flanders as he began dating (to eventually end up with Edna Krabapple).

Maude is not the only "Simpsons" character to die. or in some cases, just disappear. When actor Phil Hartman died, his famous characters -- most notably actor Troy McClure -- simply stopped appearing.

Now, however, the show us returning for it's season 26 premiere and a character death has been promised.

Before the episode aired, a number of fans have speculated that it would be Krusty the Clown meeting his demise, partly because the episode is called "Clown in the Dumps," and partly because producers have offered hints in that direction.

"I didn't say I was killing Krusty ... I didn't say I wasn't," producer Al Jean said during the Television Critics Association press tour, according to Mashable.

Others rumored to be possible deaths during the premiere were lesser-know characters including Krusty's dad Rabbi Hyman Krustofsky (Jackie Mason) and Sideshow Bob (Kelsey Grammer).

Now that the episode has aired we know who it was and the deceased character is Rabbi Hyman Krustovsky, who died after telling Krusty he is not funny.
