Damien Hirst is one of the richest and most controversial artists of the 21st century.

His focus on death, his propensity for using assistants for everything, and his prices at auction have all made Hirst much ingrained in the pop-culture lexicon.

Hirst made big news a few years ago in September 2008 (you know, when the recession started) when he shattered auction records raising over $198 million.

Recently, Hirst has been largely out of the spotlight, though still closely followed by art connoisseurs. He also quietly opened at an art shop called 'Other Criteria' located in Soho.

'Other Critieria' is fairly well known as a place for contemporary art both in NYC and London.

So that may get you wondering: Hirst in Soho? Must be in-expensive prints or originals for a bargain price. Well, no.

Hirst is selling some editioned art limited to 50 for around 50 grand. There are some more "affordable" options like skatedecks, and drawings for around $5,000.

The reality is that for Hirst, these prices are actually considered affordable. The idea that Hirst will be one of the most famous artists of this time in art history is almost a given.

The days of the astronomical prices at auction may be over, but it may be that something like the death of this artist that will spark a re-visit to big numbers from the ultra-rich.

On the other hand, that should never be the point.
