'The Vampire Diaries' Ian Somerhalder Uses Social Media To Fight For Things He Believes In

He plays the passionate and erratic Damon Salvatore in "The Vampire Diaries," but it seems as if Ian Somerhalder has a much softer personality in real life from rescuing puppies to saving wetlands.
Somerhalder has been one of many celebrities who use his social media presence and his impact with fans to support the greater good of mankind.
He has taken it upon himself to use his Twitter and Instagram pages to help find animals homes as well as protect the bayou he spent time in growing up.
The post that started his most recent plea to fans was four days ago while he was on the set of "The Vampire Diaries," in the Mystic Falls cemeteries. As he and his cast filmed deep in the Georgie woods, Somerhalder posted a photo to Instagram with the caption, "Good morning from the cemetery of Mystic Falls...
Lots of things on my mind on this beautiful morning in Georgia-I have a great deal of things to say today. Standby please and hopefully you have the time to listen and help me. I am always grateful;) Love, Ian."
By informing his fans that he has a few things on his mind the post was a pretty successful tactic to get all of his fans engaged to his Instagram for future posts.
Following that post was an extensive message summarizing his meeting with Alan Black, a Louisiana District Attorney candidate.
"Just had an amazing powwow with an amazing guy running for District Attorney in my home district of St.
Tammany and Washington Parish Louisiana named Alan Black," wrote Somerhalder in his caption.
"What makes this guy so awesome-why I think you'll love him, is that he speaks the same language as so many of us-no,not just English but the language of youth,of community and sustainability...What all of these mean to communities&therefore the country-therefore the world.The true importance of giving young people a chance to develop -becoming better adults-living fuller, healthier&productive lives that make communities work."
The rest of the extensive caption displayed a passion for the subject. He encourages his fans to take action in the community and do their research.
He appeals to a younger crowd of people because of "The Vampire Diaries," and as educated as his post is, it is important for other celebrities to lend a helping hand in local and global political and national-politics.
"My office right now... on top of shooting, I'm sitting here trying to figure out some things that are just literally making my mind race, my heart beat fast and making me breathe in reverse," said Somerhalder in his Instagram caption.
"I'm ready though, ready to tackle the day, do as much as I can as well as I can then winds down for the night and do it all over again tomorrow ;)Trying to figure out how to get dogs and cats adopted, how to convince the army corps of engineers as well as the Department of Environmental Quality in Louisiana, to NOT allow an oil company to hydraulic fracture in my precious and wetland-filled hometown.

Somerhalder continued to tease fans with issues that he feels passionate about. It's almost as if he is writing one of the persuasive essays you were asked to complete while attending school. He lays out the topics that he is going to discuss and then proceeds to do so in a few more posts which act as body paragraphs.
Somerhalder has turned his Instagram posts into a persuasive essay. The following posts address his opposition for the a hydraulic fracture that threatens the wetlands and aquifers for Tammany Parish, the same town in Louisiana where Black is running for District attorney.
His local connection to Louisiana seems to weigh heavy on his mind and while thinking about his status as a celebrity and his following, Somerhalder sees that he can use that to not only his advantage, but to the advantage of those who would be affected by such intrusions into their society.
He also posted a few photos and videos that appeal to any animal lovers heart. He is a huge advocate for animal adoption and preventing innocent animals from losing their lives because they could not find a proper home.
"Some one please go get this little guy tomorrow- he will be killed soon:( If anyone is looking for a two-year-old shepherd mix, this guy is at the Rockdale animal shelter next to Conyers Georgia. They will be putting him down soon, so please rescue if you can!" read part of his caption of a photo with a sad pup looking through a cage.
Somerhalder is a master at appealing to the hearts of others through social media.
However, appealing to the masses on important topics and ones that would make society better is an admirable trait that all celebrities should aspire to have when they acquire fame.
