Star Wars: The Last Jedi Director Compares His Film To The Empire Strikes Back

One of the main criticisms about Star Wars: The Force Awakens was that it felt too similar to A New Hope in terms of its structure and story. Star Wars: The Last Jedi director, Rian Johnson, is hoping his movie has enough different elements to stand out against The Empire Strikes Back.

Rian Johnson admits during an interview with Entertainment Weekly that there are some similarities between the two films, although there are several differences too. According to him, it should be a unique experience for movie goers. You can read his comments on the matter down below.

I just tried to kind of ignore that aspect of it and have the story take the shape that it needed to, but look, Rey is off in a remote location with a Jedi master, and the Resistance is in a tough spot, and we're intercutting those stories. By its very nature, there are some structural parallels. But these are new characters, they're dealing with new things, and that ultimately is what defines the movie. So I think that's going to be unique

Johnson wrote the script for the movie himself so hopefully he changed things up so it's not essentially a retread of The Empire Strikes Back. The actual story for the film has yet to be revealed, although some hints have been given with the footage we have seen so far. It is suggested that we will finally know who Rey's parents are and more.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi releases in North America on December 15th, 2017. The final movie in the trilogy is Star Wars: Episode IX which won't be out until May 24th, 2019.
