Thanks to the recent release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the science fiction franchise has now overtaken the Harry Potter franchise to become the second highest grossing movie series in history.

Bear in mind, numbers have not been adjusted for inflation.

As reported by StarWarsNewsNet, the space franchise has now grossed $8,572,623,930.

This includes A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, The Clone Wars, The Force Awakens, Rogue One and The Last Jedi.

Star Wars' gross is higher than the Harry Potter franchise which earned $8,539,253,704. Despite the big gross from both franchises, the MCU is at the top earning over $13 billion across 17 movies to date.

Star Wars is moving up thanks to the release of The Last Jedi. The movie has now earned $1.090 billion at the worldwide Box Office making it the 20th highest grossing movie of all time.

The movie is expected to gross around $1.6 billion at the end of its theatrical run making it the fourth highest grossing movie of all time.

It won't be able to catch The Force Awakens, Titanic or Avatar which remain in the top three spots respectively.

The fact that The Last Jedi is still earning lots of money means word of mouth for the film isn't as bad as initially though.

Yes the film is not as universally liked as The Force Awakens, but the Box Office gross has remained kind of steady and hasn't fallen as fast as previously predicted by some doubters.

Star Wars will continue to make a lot of money in the future with Solo: A Star Wars Story out in May 2018 and then Episode IX releasing in December 2019.

Not to mention a new trilogy and more solo movies are in the works too!
