This evening, millions of Shawn Mendes fans waited with bated breath as they counted down the minutes to the release of Mendes' new single, "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back." And now it's here, and boy is it good.
Mendes started leaking news about the new single yesterday, and over the past 24 hours, he revealed a few details...but the song was still shrouded in mystery... Nevertheless, thousands of fans were tweeting about the single, and sharing the short clips that Mendes has made available.
But at 11:14 pm ET tonight, the fans' wishes were answered, as "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back" was released on iTunes. Mendes announced the release with this tweet:
"There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back" hasn't yet been placed on Mendes' website, shawnmendesofficial.com.
Mendes has said that as soon as he wrote the song, he felt the need to release it to the fans. And it isn't surprising why: the guitar on this single is amazing, and the finger picking quality shows what sets Mendes apart from his peers. Mendes has cited musicians Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars, and John Mayer as his influences, and you can see bits of all of their styles in this single.
You can also feel the same country and folk acoustic sounds in this single that have made so many critics fall in love with Mendes. Check out what some fans had to say:
According to Billboard, Mendes collaborated with some of his previous collaborators, including Teddy Geiger (who produced the song), Scott Harris, and Geoff Warburton, for the single. Mendes plans to feature "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back" during his Illuminate tour. The tour begins this coming week, with stops in Europe before returning to North America.
