There is a huge vacancy on the director's chair for Star Wars: Episode IX thanks to the departure of Colin Trevorrow.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi director, Rian Johnson, is not confident yet that he will be called up to sign on for the next movie.

Rian Johnson was promoting Star Wars: The Last Jedi in Japan (via Oricon) and he is unsure if he will be directing Star Wars: Episode IX at the moment.

He mentioned there were never any plans for him to direct the ninth episode and he currently doesn't know what is going to happen with it.

Johnson was only tasked to direct and write the eighth episode which is out this December.

Johnson did reiterate that he will be happy just being an audience member for Episode IX and hopes the new director will show him an interesting story.

Lucasfilm could always convince Johnson to come back, but this might depend on the critical and commercial success of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

In related news, Johnson also revealed that actor Joseph Gordon Levitt is making a cameo in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Levitt is voicing an alien in one scene of the film. Johnson and Levitt has worked on numerous movies before that including Brick and Looper.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens also had famous cameos from the likes of Simon Pegg and Daniel Craig.

Tom Hardy is supposed to have a cameo in Star Wars: The Last Jedi too.

It's expected his cameo will be behind a mask so it will be up to the fans to seek out who he is when they watch the movie.
