Carmen Sandiego was all the rage back in the late '80s and early '90s, with the computer game character starring in two live-action game shows and one animated series about a thief named Carmen Sandiego that traveled the globe while eluding authorities.

A brand new animated series was announced last year for release in 2017 and now Netflix has announced a live action movie that will feature a familiar face that ties in with the animated series.

When the animated Netflix Carmen Sandiego series was announced last year, it was revealed that Jane the Virgin's Gina Rodriguez would be voicing the lead character in this 22 episode animated series.

According to Deadline, Netflix really liked Rodriguez in the role, as they have now announced that they have cast her as the live action version of the character in a new live action feature they are producing.

This reports states that this live action feature will be a standalone movie, so it sounds like the animated series will not be tying into it.

This almost seems like a slamdunk with Rodriguez playing the role in both, but maybe the show will be more grounded while the animated series goes more wild.

As of right now, there is no write or director attached to the live action project, but Netflix has confirmed that the Carmen Sandiego live action feature will be coming at some point regardless.

The animated series and movie are being handled by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, that owns the rights to the character, more specifically led by Carolina Frasier, who is head of HMH Productions.

There is no release window announced, but I would guess that it will follow the release of the animated series that would do a good job at the getting new generations introduced to this classic character.
