In order to combat the MCU and DC, Universal Pictures blueprinted its own Dark Universe franchise. However, the poor reception for 'The Mummy' 2017 may have put those plans six feet under already. This is bad news for those that were working on future movies.

The people responsible for the Dark Universe franchise have departed. Writers and producers, Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan, have left the project altogether according to sources that tell The Hollywood Reporter. Kurtzman is instead focusing on Star Trek Discovery while Chris Morgan is writing the Fast & Furious spinoff starring Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Jason Statham.

The Dark Universe was supposed to unite many of movie's famous monsters. Aside from The Mummy, others movies would have included The Wolfman, The Invisible Man, Frankenstein and more in one shared universe. Universal Pictures wanted big stars such as Johnny Depp and Javier Bardem.

They already acquired Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe in The Mummy.

The Mummy 2017 was sadly a flop and is one of the worst movies I've seen all year. Even though the movie earned over $409 million at the Box Office, audience and critical reception was very poor. It has a dismal 16% approval rating by critics and an audience score of only 36% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Universal Pictures may not have to worry too much about scrapping the Dark Universe.

The movie studio still has the Jurassic World and Fast & Furious franchises to fall back on.

Still, the studio needs to try something in order to compete with the likes of Star Wars, Marvel and DC in the near future.

Universal Pictures may hire new people to ensure they don't make the same mistake like The Mummy.
