Tonight, at the end of his broadcast, MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell announced that he would be returning for a contract extension.

In sort of a "by the way" move, O'Donnell brought on an intern, Joseph De La Cruz, who talked about his time interning on the show and his future plans.

At the end of the mini-interview with De La Cruz, O'Donnell noted "you know where I'll be in June? I'll be sitting right here covering everything that happens for the next couple of years."

With that, O'Donnell ended his program for the evening.

There had been talks for quite a while regarding whether O'Donnell would remain on MSNBC. There was plenty of speculation that the executives, Phil Griffin and Andy Lack, were looking to drop him and replace him with Brian Williams, who currently hosts the 11:00 show on MSNBC.

Lack especially has made it clear that he's not a fan of the progressive programming on the network.

Here's what a source said about the situation earlier:

Hayes, Maddow, O'Donnell and the entire primetime lineup is doing record numbers and Lack can't stand it. It makes him furious," said one senior MSNBC source, echoing the sentiment of many other insiders who spoke to HuffPost only on the condition of anonymity.

However, there was a lot of fan activity on Twitter and other platforms trying to get O'Donnell renewed. It looks like in the end they won out.
