Juan Fontanive is an east-coast artist who captures the beauty of movement; from the soft flutter of a butterflies wings to the frenzued flapping of a hummingbird's, his flip books bring simply, though nonetheless exquisite, moments in nature to life.

Fontanive salvages mechanical parts from old clocks and pushbikes, which he takes back to his studio in Brookln. Along with oxide, he uses these parts to help to run his flip book machines. Said flip book machines are comprised of hundreds of hand drawn images laid in orderly layers.

When the machine is turned on the pages rotate rapidly, making the images dance in surprisingly delightful patterns. The flipping of the pages is complimented by the subtle and repetitive clicking of the gears that lie underneath, engaging viewers both visually and audibly.

A harmonious blend of sculpture and film, Fontanive's flip books are truly mesmerizing.
