Social media giant Instagram has been on a clean-up tear to remove all of the the pages they considered to be "spam" according to BBC. Now certain celebrities and some normal users are suffering the big losses such as Justin Bieber, Akon and Instagram itself.

If you were asking yourself why you have less followers on Instagram, chances are some of them might have been spam accounts.

"Like its parent company Facebook, Instagram routinely removes accounts to limit spam and prevent users buying followers to appear more popular," reported BBC. "Rapper Akon reportedly lost 56% of his followers in the cull."

If you've ever scrolled through some of the followers on your favorite artists Instagram page you'd be able to see that a lot of them are actually fake accounts soliciting some type of product or follow me scheme.

After Instagram's clean-up it's estimated that Justin Bieber has lost 3.5 million followers according to CNN.

"It turns out that the celebrities on the Internet are not as famous as we thought.

Some of the biggest names in show business shed the largest numbers of fake followers on Instagram, with the Bieb leading the way, according to data compiled by Zach Allia, a software developer," wrote Aaron Smith of CNN.

Does this change the way we should view certain celebrities? Probably not Bieber still has 20.3 million followers of Instagram so it's safe to say that he didn't take that big of a hit at all.

However, you will be able to check out your favorite celebrities and comments from their real fans and haters without having a product promotion or get rich quick post in your way.
