The 2018 Emmy Awards are still a number of months away, with it not set to air until this September.

Nominations are being submitted for the awards show right now however, which featured a bit of a surprise involving the cast of the popular as ever Game of Thrones.

Like many shows we've seen with large ensemble casts, Game of Thrones has always stuck with nominating its actors and actresses for the supporting awards for actor and actress respectively.

However, HBO is looking to switch things up this year by gunning for the lead category this time around.

According to Gold Derby, which has provided the full rundown of nominations submitted by HBO for the upcoming 2018 Emmy Awards, both Emilia Clarke and Kit Harrington will be moving out of the supporting categories and into the lead.

The full rundown provided for Game of Thrones has them submitting Emilia Clarke for Drama Actress and Kit Harrington for Drama Actor. In the Drama Supporting Actress category, they are nominating Lena Headey, Sophie Turner, and Maisie Williams, while the Drama Supporting Actor category features Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Peter Dinklage.

Lastly, they have also submitted Diana Rigg as a Drama Guest Actress.

This is definitely a gutsy move for HBO to do, as shifting the two to a lead role is something they haven't done before.

However, the Supporting Actor and Actress categories are even more full than the others, so it might better their chances in some ways, while also putting them up against the best of the best as well.

With the seventh season of Game of Thrones putting both Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow in essentially leading roles, this definitely is a fitting choice.

The only bad news for fans is that we still have another year to wait for the eighth and final season of the series as they are taking 2018 off.
