Sadly in late 2016, Carrie Fisher passed away too early.

Disney has now stated that her role in the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi will not be altered due to her death in real life. The movie will be seen as it was originally intended.

The Hollywood Reporter had a chance to interview Bob Iger who is the CEO of Disney.

Iger commented about Fisher's passing, but mentioned her death won't affect what happens in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. You can read his comments about the situation below.

When we bought Lucasfilm, we were going to make three films -- Episodes VII, VIII and IX. We had to deal with tragedy at the end of 2016. Carrie appears throughout VIII. We are not changing VIII to deal with her passing. Her performance remains as it is in VIII. In Rogue One, we had some digital character. We are not doing that with Carrie.

Carrie Fisher already filmed all of her scenes in The Last Jedi before she sadly passed away. What we will see this December when the movie comes out is Disney's original vision for the film.

Things will get more interesting when Episode IX comes out though. Episode IX could see a change in the story...

Iger also mentioned more Star Wars films might be coming after the release of Episode IX in 2019.

He said there potentially could be another decade and a half worth of Star Wars stories that they can put onto the screen.

Since the Star Wars universe is so large and broad, there's lots of characters that they can focus on.

The Star Wars brand is still strong so there's no harm in making more movies if people watch them. Hopefully Disney is able to make each Star Wars film feel different and fresh though.
