But did they utilize in vitro fertilization (IVF) to conceive? Now that Beyonce and Amal Clooney have themselves announced the impending arrival of twins, the matter has gained renewed attention.

Very few celebrities have confirmed receiving assistance with reproduction. Giuliana Rancic's public battle with infertility was well documented by cameras as was Kim Kardashian's path to conceiving Saint West.

In addition, Chrissy Teigen has talked about how long it took her to conceive and her choice to pursue assisted reproductive technology.

It's not clear why more celebrities aren't honest about this admission given that IVF is such a standard treatment nowadays.

So just what are the chance of conceiving multiples naturally? According to the statistics, about 12-16 people out of every 1000 individuals conceives twins naturally. But in the past 30 years, the birth rate for fraternal twins has grown by 76%.

The reason that the chance of having twins goes up so much in IVF is that many people elect to transfer two embryos at one time.

In addition, even when one elects to transfer one embryo, the chances of that embryo splitting and producing identical twins also goes up.

The expense and the financial burden of IVF are also extensive.

The process can cost as much as $30,000 and can involve weeks of hormonal injections, followed by surgery to extract a woman's eggs, and later, another procedure to implant created embryos.

If a couple has a frozen embryo implanted, the process after implantation involves further hormonal injection treatment for a specified period.
