We've only seen a live action Batgirl on the big screen once and that was in the poorly received Batman and Robin film back in 1997.

The character was added to The LEGO Batman Movie, although that was only in animated form. Now we might see the character in her own movie.

As reported by Variety, Joss Whedon is currently in talks with Warner Bros. to "write, direct, and produce" a Batgirl movie.

This movie will be connected to the DC Cinematic Universe. This means the Ben Affleck Batman might make a cameo.

The website reports that the project just got off the ground as recently as a month ago.

Whedon is perfect to helm a movie like this as he has always been a fan of putting strong women roles in his films. Not to mention Whedon directed The Avengers and its sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron.

After Avengers: Age of Ultron, Whedon took a break from directing movies. Ultron was a big task for him and he butted heads with Marvel quite a few times during that movie's production.

This is probably a reason why he's going to make a DC movie now. That being said, he's still involved with the Agents of SHIELD TV show.

As aforementioned, the character's only live action appearance was in Batman and Robin where she was played by Alicia Silverstone.

In The LEGO Batman Movie, the character was voiced by Rosario Dawson. It will be interesting to see who they cast as Batgirl in this new movie.

DC has a lot of movies in the pipeline. Wonder Woman and Justice League are out later this year with many more on the way. Future films include Man of Steel 2, The Batman, Aquaman and many more.
