The Goldbergs has been one of ABC's most successful and consistent sitcoms since it debuted back in 2013.

As a result of its success, it was natural that ABC would try to spin it off, though their attempt last pilot season failed.

ABC is not giving up though as it has ordered to series a retooled version of that same spinoff with a former cast member of The Goldbergs returning in a lead role.

Previously known as Schooled, the '90s spinoff was not picked up last pilot season and instead was aired as part of the ongoing fifth season of The Goldbergs.

This starred Tim Meadows' guidance counselor character Mr. Glascott as the new principal of William Penn Academy a decade later, with Bryan Callan's Coach Mellor still around as another lead character.

However, the big focus was on Glascott's sister, a new character who was played by Nia Long, that got a job at the school, as well as her family.

This premise didn't pan out too well, as we saw in the abysmal pilot that aired a few months ago.

While that went through pilot season and didn't get picked up, ABC seems to have faith in a new version of this series that is currently untitled, but has been picked up for 13 episodes to air in the 2018/2019 broadcast season according to TVLine.

This series will also take place in the '90s with Meadows and Callan as two of the leads, but rather than involving Long's character and her children, the other main character will be played by the returning AJ Michalka in the role of Lainey Lewis, who is now a teacher at William Penn Academy.

Michalka has played the role of Erica's best friend on The Goldbergs since the show started, with her becoming Barry's girlfriend starting in season two.

She was a regular for the last few seasons, but went off the college for this current season and has only been in a few episodes.

She was always a great character, so it'll be great to see her return and be a main character this time as well.
