It sure looks like Paul and Karine are going to be the most interesting couple during this season/generation of 90 Day Fiance.

After three episodes of getting to know Paul, it seems we know just as little as we did at the beginning.

But that's about to change.

'90 Day Fiance: Before The 90 Days': What Did Paul Do?

Paul Staehle seems pretty quiet, although very strange. He's the kind of guy who you may be worried about when you meet him, because you wonder if something may be off.

We witnessed this throughout the first several episodes of 90 Day Fiance, as he packed several trunks of stuff for his trip, and his mom gave him a clump of her hair before he left.

But what we witnessed was nothing compared to what Staehle apparently did.

According to the Kentucky corrections website via Reddit, Paul Staehle was released from the Kentucky State Reformatory in April 2015. You can view the release document here. And he's still apparently under state supervision -- until 2020.

He was convicted for two MAJOR crimes: Arson in the 2nd degree, and burning property to defraud insurance:

So Paul Staehle was sentenced to significant jail time, but it was reduced by the court to "shock probation", which is when the court gives someone -- generally a first offender -- a short time in jail before releasing.

The jail time is supposed to "shock" the person out of committing other crimes.

There are also reporters that Staehle may have violated a restraining order (EPO), possibly related to domestic violence. We looked for records of that in the Kentucky databases, and found this about the EPO:

October 27, 2013

Violation of a Kentucky Epo/Dvo

'90 Day Fiance: Before The 90 Days': Does this Explain Why Paul Staehle Didn't Want To Sleep With Karine?

So we know that Paul was convicted for arson...but during the show, he said that what he wanted to explain to Karine was regarding a past relationship, that "it ended so badly, it ended up getting me in some serious trouble."

That may be the arson, but it sounds more like the EPO. The arson seems unrelated to the EPO, given that the arson occurred in 2007, and the EPO violation was in 2013.

Interestingly, Staehle appears to have been sentenced for the arson after the 2013 violation. Given that, the court appears to have given Staehle a surprisingly lenient punishment.

Regardless, the restraining order and violation seem like they have something to do with his relationship to Karine.

Remember that Paul refused to sleep with her, saying that he wanted her to get a pregnancy and STD test beforehand.

While an STD test makes sense, the pregnancy test seemed a bit strange to us. What could Paul be concerned about? Does he think Karine is pregnant and wants to convince Paul that he's the father?

'90 Day Fiance: Before The 90 Days': Paul Staehle and Pregnancy

There are two options here: One is that the pregnancy test and Paul's former relationships are totally unrelated. The other is that perhaps Paul had a similar incident in his past, which would lead him to be concerned about pregnancy.

We will have to wait and see what happens in the next few episodes to determine the truth...
