WWE SummerSlam 2017 Review/Results: A PPV With Highs And Lows

WWE SummerSlam 2017 was a mixed bag in terms of the entire show. Despite having one of the best matches of 2017, the rest of the card failed to live up to expectations.

The show was let down by some very odd booking choices. It's also worth mentioning this show had no pyro either. Not even a big show like SummerSlam is exempt from budget cuts!

Let's start off with the pre-show. The first match was The Miz, Bo Dallas and Curtis Axel beating the team of Matt Hardy, Jeff Hardy and Jason Jordan.

The weird part isn't the outcome, but the time WWE scheduled this match.

This match was put on way too early that many fans weren't even in the arena yet to see it! WWE should have left the fluff out of the pre-show and booked this match a little later in the evening.

The other odd decision is the outcome of the Cruiserweight Title match. Akira Tozawa lost the belt to Neville six days after winning it on Raw.

The match itself was decent, but it doesn't make any sense for Neville to regain the title so quickly. It makes Tozawa's reign as champion look like a waste of time.

Thankfully, the last pre-show match didn't have any controversy. The Usos and The New Day killed it like always. It was one of the better matches of the entire night.

In the end though, The Usos got the victory. The match went on for nearly 20 minutes and the crowd was hot. It's worth watching in case you missed it.

The actual main card started with John Cena vs. Baron Corbin. The match itself was very exciting as Cena and Corbin have great chemistry.

There were many near falls and the crowd was vocal throughout it. However, the finish is where things get iffy.

It seems as if Corbin is getting buried as Cena beat him clean in this match with one AA. Corbin's future is going down the drain ever since he lost the Money in the Bank briefcase.

The two women's title matches were solid. It was great to see Natalya getting the win over Naomi to become the new Smackdown Women's title. Natalya deserved it since she has been in the WWE for a long time.

Sasha Banks also defeated Alexa Bliss to be the new Raw Women's Champion. Even though both matches weren't bad, they weren't as exciting as Ember Moon vs. Asuka at NXT Takeover. That match is my favorite women's match in 2017.

There were a lot of matches that were just thrown together that had no stakes whatsoever. Big Cass easily defeated Big Show in a match nobody cared about.

The only cool thing to happen was Enzo escaping the shark cage. Enzo however was just met with a big boot from Cass for his efforts. Overall, a poor match.

Finn Balor beat Bray Wyatt in another average match that meant nothing.

Wyatt continues to be a glorified jobber while Balor has some type of momentum. Still, this feud seems like a waste of time since neither of them are getting big pushes.

The biggest waste of time was Rusev vs. Randy Orton.

Rusev is getting buried worse than Corbin because he lost to one RKO from Orton in a match that only lasted for 10 seconds! Rusev already lost to Cena a month ago.

It will be interesting to see what Orton does after this. He doesn't seem to have any direction at the moment.

The last boring match was Jinder Mahal vs. Shinsuke Nakamura for the WWE Championship. Nakamura controlled the match with lots of kicks and strikes. In the end though, Mahal retained the WWE Title thanks to a distraction from The Singh Brothers again.

Mahal won by using his Khallas (cobra clutch slam) finisher. That finisher is being protected as not many people have kicked out of it so far.

Mahal winning disappointed the crowd, but it made sense. WWE is touring India soon so that's why he's still champion...

In one of the better matches of the night, AJ Styles beat Kevin Owens to retain the US Title. This match was boring at the start, but it picked up later on.

In my opinion, it was the best match between Styles and Owens.

The added drama was the fact that Shane McMahon was the special guest referee. Owens is likely going to feud with Shane soon due to him disagreeing with his officiating.

The second best match of the night was Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose vs. Sheamus and Cesaro.

These men wrestled for close to 20 minutes and there were a lot of high spots.

There was even a funny unscripted moment where Cesaro popped a beach ball from the crowd. At the end though, Rollins and Ambrose hit their finishers on Sheamus to become the new Raw Tag Team Champions.

The match of the night and possibly the best match of 2017 was the SummerSlam 2017 main event. It was Brock Lesnar, Braun Strowman, Samoa Joe and Roman Reigns in a Fatal 4 Way for the Universal Title.

All of the men here were booked really strong and nobody came off as a weak link. Strowman destroyed Lesnar early on in the match by power slamming him through two tables!

Samoa Joe came off as a beast too using his Coquina Clutch on everyone. Lesnar also pulled out the Kimura lock on Strowman for the first time in many years.

Reigns was the same as always as he speared and Superman Punched everyone. Sadly though, we didn't see a Shield reunion.

It seems as if WWE is protecting Strowman as he didn't get beat up by Lesnar that much. Lesnar wasn't able to suplex him. At the end of the match, Lesnar managed to retain his title by doing the F-5 on Reigns.

Reigns getting the pinfall is interesting. I guess WWE wants to show Reigns is vulnerable after all. It will be interesting to see where the Raw main event scene looks after this.

Overall, SummerSlam 2017 was a mixed bag for me. There were several good matches, and several bad or average matches. Thankfully the matches that were good saved the show from being entirely terrible. This is a 6.5/10 or 7/10 show for me.
