One of the most popular characters in the Star Wars universe is Lando Calrissian, although sadly he won't appear in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

The film's director, Rian Johnson, has now given somewhat of an explanation why he's not in it.

Rian Johnson talked more about the topic during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. According to Johnson, the story didn't fit for Lando to be brought back.

This is unfortunate as he could have easily added him in via a cameo at least. His comments about the lack of Lando can be seen below.

No, and I don't want fans to get their hopes up. He's not in the film and it was never really something that came up. I mean, I loved that character. It would have been fun to see him, but it's just not something that ever really had a place in the story.

Lando can be seen in the new Star Wars Battlefront 2 video game as well as a younger version of himself in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

The latter will be portrayed by the talented Donald Glover. The film will allow us to see both a younger Lando Calrissian and Han Solo.

Lando could always come back in Star Wars: Episode IX directed by J.J. Abrams.

This will be his last chance to star in the new trilogy of films.

The person who plays Lando, Billy Dee Williams, actually respects the studio's decision not to include the character although he would be happy to appear in any future Star Wars film if they asked him.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be released in North America on December 15th, 2017. It will be the longest film in the series as its duration is 150 minutes long including credits.
